9 Aug marks the birthday of Singapore. There is a Chinese saying that the Family is the basic building block of a Nation.
I was born in Bangkok and lived in Singapore and Tokyo. In Japan, I fell in love with Street Photography. Unlike painting, there are many elements of photography that is left to chance. The serendipity and challenge of capturing that special moment gives me both the thrill and the drive to pour in the hours.
Through this series of photos, I reflect about what Singapore stands for and examine the family bonds, especially during these difficult times (due to C-19). Singapore grew up as a trading nation and values diversity, meritocracy and equality. While Singapore is predominantly Chinese, it is multi-cultural with Malays, Indians and Westerners.
In Singapore, practically “nothing” is left to chance. Once a year, we don on White and Red, the colours of the Nation and head out to celebrate. For that brief moment, we are indistinguishable, regardless of Race and Religion, sharing a common identity.
