Syngenta Photography Award: Scarcity-Waste

The second edition of the Syngenta Photography Award invited photographers to respond to the theme of ‘Scarcity-Waste’ - one of the greatest challenges we face today in a world of increasingly limited resources. The winners, chosen by a distinguished international panel from more than 2,000 submissions from photographers in over 100 countries, were announced at a ceremony in Somerset House, London on March 10. Selected for their artistic quality and photographic technique, these thought-provoking and powerful responses to the subject provide a unique perspective on scarcity and waste and the tensions between them.

Buriganga River, Dhaka, Bangladesh. While we are now celebrating 400 years of Dhaka City, the River Buriganga, that has played a vital role in its growth, is fighting to survive. Today it is being choked to death, extremely fragile and unable to run its natural course. We, the people of Dhaka, are killing it. From the series, "Desperate Urbanisation" (2010-2014).
